Romantic love is enchanting but doomed to sadomasochistic games, according to the French existential philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre. Love is an important way of revealing and understanding oneself. Yet, love is also deceptive because it is actually a project of making oneself be loved and convincing the lover to confess secrets.
